State of Sol
Address

PreExpansion, the Civil War Years

Before the Expansion Years (period of SubSpace colonization) Sol was already beginning it's collapse. Seven planets had been colonized decades before Delt-Serpentis was discovered. These were the seven planets beginning with Earth and extending to Pluto.
Mercury is not capable of supporting extended life, and Venus is too harsh to colonize with economic safety.
Of all the Solar System, only two planets are furtile enough to successfully support crops and animal breeding; Earth and Mars. The climates of Earth and Mars are very much alike, thanks to terraforming.
Relying on just two planets to support an entire system put a straign on everyone. Resources quickly dwindled as the populations increased. As the numbers of starving and dyeing grew, pirate factions looking out for their own people began waring for the decresing supplies. These years are now known as the Civil War years, and in fact these times lead to the discovery of SubSpace.
A small freighter convoy leaving Earth for the PTMC installation near Mercury was attacked by a Pirate faction near the coordinates of the Delta-Serpentis Node. One of these freighters suffered critical damage and exploded. This explosion, for one reason or another, opened the Delta-Serpentis Jump Node. Scientist now speculate that the shock wave from this freighter "harmonized" the RealSpace lid of Delta-Serpentis.
Three days later, after enemy patrols had left the coordinates, a full Science Team led by Professor James Whiteside set out to examine the anomoly. Little was found at first, except traces of unknown elements (presumably leakage from Delta-Serpentis). These small trace elements lead to the invention of a crude Meyerson Spectrum analyzer. This device indicated massive amounts of unknown energy in spectrums just above visible light.
Returning to Terra with this puzzling information, the scientist began laying out the known facts. Their conclusions began relying on the physics principles put forth by the twentieth century's Stephen Hawking. A working test model of the first Hawking Drive was designed.
The original purpose of the Hawking Drive (then called the Hawking Analyzer) was to gather information from these strange radiations by bombarding it with special blends of ions. These ions went far beyond their original purpose of bringing the radiation into the visible spectrum, they actually opened the Delta-Serpentis Jump Node.
After carefully waying the risk of traveling through the Node, the scientist entered SubSpace.
No one knew what to expect. Upon arrival in Delta-Serpentis, the scientist did not imediatly understand what had happened. The first thoughts were that they had traveled into a different dimension entirely. This idea was layed to rest when recognizable star patterns were found in the direction from hich they had come. Analysis placed the Terran Science Team several hundred light years away from their home. Alarmed, the scientist began devizing ways to return and searching for the answers to what had happened.
Gettin back proved as easy as the first voyage. When returning to Sol, the Science Team was met by several Naval Cruisers. The United Republics of Sol had been watching and immediatly recognized the potential after hearing the full story.
Scouting Teams began travelling through what the Scientist had named "Freespace" and doing preliminary recon in Delta-Serpentis.
This came as a god-send to the people of Sol. By this time the System had used 70-75% of it's natural resources.

The Expansion Years
(The Exodus)

After Recon Teams had declared Delta-Serpentis safe, the first colonist (comprised of SG officials and Marine and Naval soldiers) moved in and set up small outposts.
Soon after a full scale Exodus began from Sol. The pirate factions were granted Amnesty if they would willingly colonize the Delta-Serpentis system. The excess populations in Sol quickly packed up and boarded the Civilian Freighters headed through the Jump Node.
The Sol economy reached the highest point in 35 years. Resources were pumped in through Cargo Lines, and Sol was given a new chance at life.
The main industries in Sol moved from mining facilities to production factories. Sol remained the main source of manufactured goods in order to give the economy a boost, and give the populations a hand up.
After discovering yet another Jump Node, the government changed from the United Republics of Sol to the fledgling Galactic Terran Alliance.
This period of Expansion lasted for decades without encountering any other life forms. This is something that both confused and alarmed the Science Division. Statistically the Terrans should have encountered weveral new life forms. Many of the systems colonized were perfecty suited for supporting life.
The lack of indigenous life reinforced fanatic religous groups still believeing in the idea of an all powerful omnipotent "god." These religous groups began riots in several sectors of both Sol and the newly colonized systems. They were quickly subdued by the GTA.

The Terran/Vasudan War

We had our first contact with extra Solar Intelligent life in Beta Aquilae in 2318. A small terran scout team encountered one of the Vasudan Parlimentary's Typhon class destroyers. For a period of three years, the GTA maintained an uneasy peace with the Vasudans.
After the destruction of the GTD Goliath by unknown forces, Senator Taulus placed blame on the Vasudan Empire, and the 14 Year War began.
This war, though costly on the front lines, increased manufacturing output in Sol. As many colonists used to say, "What this galaxy needs is a good war."
After severl months of hostilities, it becam aparent that the T/V would not be a passing skirmish.
Though the war raised the average income of Sol ocupants, the moral level dropped. The average civilian saw the war as a pointless display of power that would soon lead to the destruction of both sides. In spite of lowering moral, work hours increased to support the front lines. Since Sol was the primary manufactureing system, it was now also one of the only sources of manufactured good until the construction of shipyards in Vega and Terran Space of Beta Aquilae.

Civilian Revolt of Sol

After the fourth year of the T/V war, Labor Unions began revolting in Sol. Though pay wages had increased, quality of life had taken a turn for the worse.
Worker strikes forced the GTA to outlaw Labor Unions and instate extended prison sentences for all violators. After the breakdown of Labor Unions, many workers went back to work. Others, however, decided to leave the GTA and Terran space entirely, living the rogue life of frontiersmen.
This point in time did not have much affect in the GTA, but did open many civilians to ideas of mutiny. Their wishes were fufilled with the inception of the Terran Freedom Alliance in 2327.

The Great War

Moral in the Sol System reached an all time low with the appearance of the Shivans. This marked the breaking point for tensions that had been building for 15 years. Several Pirate Factions arose once again in Sol, and work forces left to find safety from the impending Shivan doom.
Worry began plagueing the GTA, as nothing seemed to be able to stop the Shivan's movement into Sol.

Destruction of Delta-Serpentis

The Shivan's were indeed stopped, at the cost of isolating Sol from the rest of the Alliance.
This seems to be the final days of the Sol System. Currently resource levels are down to only 18%. The Science Division estimate only 20-25 months before the complete depletion of all known resources.
After this point deaths from famine, hunger, and disease will begin to increase exponentially every week.
The PTMC have sent Recon into the Asteroid Belt to search for additional resources, but none have been found as of yet.
Government control has dropped to nearly nothing.
The Sol System has become a place where it's every man for himself. The last of the Loyal GTA and GTI officers have been reassigned to Darkside Outpost, where R&D are working on plans to reopen the jump node.

*****

Pilot, we are trusting you with classified information. If the Science Division doesn't come up with a plan soon, we are all likely to die. The civilians are planning a crazy mass Exodus. They are currently fueling up cruisers and freighters to carry criogenically frozen colonist across the vast expanses of space to the nearest systems.
This, of course, will not work.
With pirate and mercenary activity in the area, we are having a hard time defending the research proceedings at Darkside. We are calling all experienced pilots to active duty. These missions will determine not only your own survival, but the survival of our entire system.
