The Immortal is a Special Operations Destroyer/Carrier unfortunatly trapped in Sol. Her place is on the front lines, having one of the greatest combat records in the GTA.
The Immortal began her carrier as a standard Destroyer in the Zeta Aquilae Fleet. During the first few years of the T/V War, the Immortal kept an outstanding record of missions that not only were successful, but far surpassed what was asked. The Immortal's Captain, Admiral Jason Peterson, became a highly decorated officer in just 2 years after assuming cammand.
Peterson requested to assume full ownership of the Immortal and take her into the Special Operations Division. This action is usually frowned upon by the GTA, but the outstanding records of the Immortal and her captain led them to unanimously agree with his request.
Peterson assumed full control of the GTD Immortal and actually owns the ship in name, as long as he serves within the GTA.
This does not give Admiral Peteson license to do as he pleases with the Immortal. It does however give him full control over crew, weapons and ship loadout, modifications, and operations. As a Special Ops ship, the Immortal is acquired by retainer to anyone within the GTA who has sufficent funding. This sounds a little like the Mercenary divisions outside the GTA, but we would never stoops so low as to label the Immortal's crew as such.
In the 7 years since being licensed to Peterson, the Immortal has undergone some major modifiactions. Weapon hardpoints have been redesigned to support heavier firepower, such as the Capital Vulcon Cannons and Dedicated Missile Silos. The navigation and propulsion systems have been upgraded to attain speeds unprecendented in GTA history, allowing for fast travel between missions. The Hull strength of the Immortal has been upgraded as well to take about a quarter of the punishment she can dish out within a battle.
The impressive capabilities of the Immortal would be nothing without her crew compliment. Each and every crew member was hired for their specific abilities and skills. Onboard are not only GTA Navel Officers and Pilots, but a full platoon of Terran Marines.
In addition to the standard Alpha and Beta Wings, is the Special Ops Squad Black Thorn. The Black Thorns have been flying together since the end of the T/V war, and just recently have accepted Peterson's offer to join the Immortal's crew.
The Immortal carries enough Athena II's for Black Thorn Squadron. In exchange for his service retainer to the Darkside Outpost, Admiral Peterson has asked for a few of the experimental Eclipse fighters. This request is still under concideration.
