Hawking Drive

The Hawking Drive is used to access naturally occuring SubSpace Nodes. A natural SubSpace Node is covered in layers of RealSpace, thus making it very difficult to detect. With current technology, only the Meyerson Navigation system is capable of pin-pointing the natural Nodes.
When a Node is pin-pointed, large "warp" coils a charged by the Anderson Drive. These coils, when charged, emit resonant waves which harmonize local space around the Node. When this happens, the RealSpace "lid" exists in unison with the Node entry, allowing passage.
The Anderson Drives are only found on capital ships for two reasons: Power consumption and sheer size. The Meyerson nav system is too large to fit into unmodified allied ships.
Though the Hawking Drive itself is not much larger than the Anderson Drive, the SubSpace coils are large and bulky, larger than the standard Terran Fighter.
Shortly before the battle against the Lucifer the Hawking Drive was redesigned and was fitted into both Terran and Vasudan ships. After analyzing these ships, R&D has discovered that critical hull damage was caused by this hybrid engine. Though the hybrid can allow fighters inter-system capabilities, if repairs are not made shortly after exiting the Jump Node, hull integrity is comprimised.
